Amanda's Compost Bins

About 3 months ago I met my friend Amanda Byrd. She has 3 girls, one is in kindergarten, and the other 2 are ages three and two. We both could kick ourselves for not meeting each other sooner because we LOVE each other. She is just like me.... same interests... same values... oh she is so wonderful. I HATE that I'm moving just when we are getting to know each other so well. (but she'll have to come with me, I'm not staying behind! haha)

One thing that she has, that I absolutely adore, is her compost bins!! She knew what she wanted, had her handy husband make them and viola! Compost!! I kind of invited myself over today just so I could take pictures of her bins...

Trap doors were added to the two barrels.... and holes were drilled on both sides for air/water circulation

And then the stand was built with wheels on all four sides of the barrel.... (so you can roll it around)

Inside is dirt and brown/green material. She also waters it daily.... the water then drips into a bucket underneath that she uses to water her plants... compost tea!!

She added some worms early in the year to help with the composting. I saw it several months ago and they were the tiny, thin red worms from a bait shop. Now they are really fat ones!

It's the coolest thing I've ever seen! I didn't get a picture of her garden... but all gardeners know the secret to gardening is composting and WOW her garden has taken off. It's crazy!!  She even gave me some kale from it, yay!

One day, I plan on having a daddy/daughter weekend and my dad and I are going to make me one of these nifty contraptions!  I love it!! She said that her sisters all think she's crazy for it, but I love her for it! So we immediately knew that we were kindred spirits!  She also makes her own yogurt every week! Oh! She's a woman after my own heart!!!

  2. What about a mommy daddy daughter daughter weekend. I need these for my new Marietta garden. I just love composting. Make me feel good to make my own dirt. I said dirt not mess. I am already proficient at making messes.

  3. Well, we arrived home. Had a great trip. About composting. Good idea. About gardening. Not so much. The ground has gotten too low. Will talk to all soon. Love always.
