Washington DC- Day 1

The evening we drove in from Monticello, we walked to a grocery store. We thought it was the closest, but it wasn't. Don't tell the kids that. haha. They really weren't happy when it started raining. I said to Tyler, "imagine living in a city and having to do this several times a week." He said, "Nope! I'm not living that life." haha

The next morning we got started early and headed to the Metro. A really nice worker helped us load our cards and we were off. First stop- Arlington Cemetery.

Will bought Thomas Jefferson socks at Monticello and was happy to show them off.

Arlington Cemetery

The changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Then it was back onto the metro and to the National Mall. We are big fans of public transportation.

The Washington Monument

The kids wanted pics next to the states where they were born.

Then off to walk to the other end and see the Lincoln Memorial.

We stopped for Ice Cream and then it was off again. I said, "I think the White House is around here somewhere..." I turned around and there it was. We didn't get any closer. You cant get much closer nowadays and we didn't want to deal with going through security.

We were going to go into the National Archives, but the line was long so we went to the Museum of Natural History instead.

Lee with Charles Darwin. "Darwin!" is his favorite saying when people are acting stupid. So when we saw this, we HAD to get his picture with it.

The capital building. Again, we didn't get any closer.

By this point it was late afternoon and we had been walking and standing all day. We were all exhausted. We had 20,000 steps! Which is around 10 miles. That's a lot of walking! So we took the metro back to the Air BNB and got ready for a visit from Uncle Mark! He drove an hour to come have dinner with us. It was so fun!

Needless to say- we all slept well that night!
