February- Week Three- SNOW

Well, this might just be the week of the year! We knew an ice storm was supposed to come in on Saturday night, but honestly, I never thought it would amount to much. There are always doomsday forecasts in our neck of the woods and they rarely amount to anything. Our in-person church was cancelled on Sunday (we go every other week in person. The opposite weeks are broadcast on zoom) and that started a trickle of events.

Amy and Will were already quarantined via contract tracing from school. But we woke Monday to find sheets of ice everywhere and school canceled for Tyler. (Amy and Will would have had it online.)

The first issue was true winter gear. I bought a big package of cheap hats earlier in the year because they are always losing them. The same with gloves, although they had already lost most of those. I forgot to get Amy a new winter coat this year (she rarely wears one anyway) so she used mine for the week. Years ago I bought snow pants for the boys and still had them stashed away. I was shocked they still fit as they are a size 4/5. They were a little short, but better than nothing. I will definitely need to buy more of everything this coming year!

So what do you do on sheets of ice? Break out the sleds, of course! We live in the flat area of our county so the only semi-hill is the street in front of our house that leads to a cul-de-sac. Our neighbors came out as well and while in theory they should be able to fly down that hill, in reality it didn't work so well. But they were able to get a little movement and were happy about that.

Between Monday and Tuesday we actually had a small dusting of snow, on top of the already there ice. So we spent another day outside attempting to sled. It did work better, but still not great. Tuesday was the coldest day as the temps never got out of the 20's. And Marty? Well, this dog loves the snow. He's like a 4th child, really.

On Wednesday I didn't take any photos. It was pretty much the same. Ice, dustings, cold, repeat.

But Thursday, this is when it got fun. Over Wednesday/Thursday night we got five inches of snow. That of course on top of the inch of ice/snow that was already on the ground. This was by far the most fun day. We tried sledding again and found the tire tracks made from one car provided the perfect sledding shute. And the more we went down it, the more slick it got. It was still wasn't crazy fast, but fast enough to make it fun. After awhile Lee showed the kids how to 'snowboard' on the sleds and that became the new adventure. We stayed outside the most this day. From breakfast until lunch and then again in the afternoon.

I think everyone was worn out this night!

Friday the sun came out and it started to slowly melt away. There was still plenty of snow on the ground but I think everyone was a little tired of getting all geared up. We spent the morning inside. The kids all played a game together, I napped and Lee worked (MTSU has been shut down as well.) Amy and I tried making some hot chocolate bombs that are all the rage and it was surprisingly easy. We did it with some green melting chocolate I had stashed away but in the future will just use regular brown stuff. Drinking green chocolate is weird.

On Saturday the kids stayed mostly inside. They had created this "office" where Amy was the CEO and had a blast playing. It's my favorite when they play like this.

Lee decided he really liked shoveling. He was always outside- just shoveling. He shoveled pathways for us to get our car out (which was a good thing) he shoveled the walkway, the stairs, he knocked the icicles down, he just liked having a shovel in his hands.

Later in the afternoon Lee and I went for our weekly date. We wanted to take a long walk around campus. A lot of the pathways were still pretty icy, so we walked where we could and then I hung some pictures for him in his office.

We'll end with Amy's snack bowl. I rolled my eyes when I saw it. On the one hand she devours smoothie bowls and on the other she loves potato chips and chocolate. I guess we are all like that to some extent!

Our week of snow was grand. But now we are over it. Bring on spring!
