........when your 5 yr old is smarter than you?? (And sadly, I think Will is right behind her. He's not even 2 and he recognizes most all his letters and numbers. I didn't even teach him, he just picked it up. I mean, who does that??)
I mean, I knew Amy was smart, I live with her, but I just didn't think she's out-do me so quickly. I mean, she's 5. And a half. I'm 33.
On Sunday, during the 3rd hour of church, Amy said she felt bad. She had her head in my lap and felt warm. I just figured she was overly tired since from 5pm Thursday to 9am Sunday she was running with her cousins. But that night she was still warm, and complained of her ear hurting. The next morning she was still complaining and laid on the couch all day.... begging to go to the doctor. (!!!!) Well, they were closed since it was Memorial Day. The next morning, I called and got her an appointment for 2pm. All morning she complained, begged and cried to go to the Doctor. When it was time, Lee took her. They came back saying she had a really bad double ear infection. Both ears were full of pus (gross!!!) and were just really, really bad. The Doc prescribed some super antibiotics to take care of it. Lee told the Doctor that Amy wasn't great about taking medicine and the doc gave her a lecture about taking it or she'd have to come back and get a shot (super yikes, in Amy's book).
So you'd think she would just take the stupid medicine. No. Not Amy. We somehow got her to take it last night, but then she realized how gross it was and now adamantly refuses. This morning it was a 2 hour whine fest about it. We even held her down and forced her as best we could to take it. Of which, she started to gag and it all came out. UGH! Eventually, with friends coming over and her not being able to play with them, she told me not to watch her and she took it. I didn't see her take it because when she said not to watch her, Tyler was screaming and I needed to tend to him. (I went along with all of this because I was tired and also because I figured that me glaring at her was freaking her out and she just needed to calmly take it on her own, taking her time) She showed me the empty dropper, I was sooo happy, gave her a treat as a reward and the doorbell rang.
Later Lee asked if she took it (he had gone to school) and I told him about it. He said, "How do you know she didn't disguard it?" I assured him that she wouldn't do that. She doesn't lie and I trusted her. And I was slightly perturbed that he didn't trust her too.
Fast forward to tonight and the same thing happens. She starts with the tears, then moves into hysterics and eventually says I can't look at her when she takes it. I leave the room, but this time, for kicks, I decide to watch her... mainly to prove Lee wrong. Well, I was the one proven wrong!!
She runs over to the laundry room, squirts the medicine somewhere and then comes out. At this point, I walk in and she says, "All done!" Then I head to the laundry room, she holds the door saying, "Don't go in there!" And starts with the tears again, runs to her room and slams the door.
At this point, all I can do is laugh. I was in such shock that I was actually laughing. I wanted to kill her, but I also found it hysterical. I mean, I couldn't believe she came up with this tactic! I can see her pouring it out, but to deliberately pour it in the laundry room.... and in a place it took forever to find.... well, that was some skill!! Want to know where her "medicine dumping ground" was??
In between 2 dirty potholders (sorry uncle Steve). This child! (The dropper wasn't there, I added it in for reference.)
So now I'm completely panicked about her teen years. Lee said, "I told you so, and yeah, her teen years are going to be rough...."
We haven't come up with her punishment yet.... but it's going to be big and rough. She can't lie and certainly not about something like this that she needs to be healthy. I tried giving her a dose of meds in some ice cream tonight, but the one time she doesn't want it- would be tonight. She ate about 3 bites and declared she was full. So now I'm at a loss.... I guess we'll have to head to the doctor for a shot. Which is more of a pain for us, but maybe it'll get the point across?? She certainly hates shots. But we hate to make the Doctor the bad guy. I can't totally blame her, I tasted it and the medicine is awful. Even with the "flavoring" they put in it. But she has to get it, there's no option there.
Man, this parenting thing.... I don't think I'm up for it.

Any chance she's old enough for pills? I don't remember when we changed forms. Just thinking. Good luck though. I'm surprised that being she wanted to go to the doc and doesn't like shots, she wouldn't have taken it. Could you bribe with say pop or something to take after it that she would like more? Just thoughts. Love always.
ReplyDeleteOh my! Reminds me of the stuff my Mom said I did as a kid. Maybe try putting the medicine in a smoothie or in a spoonful of strawberry preserves. My Mom sometimes use to put my medicine in a spoonful of peanut butter...of course that might be difficult if it's liquid. Good luck! ;o)
ReplyDeleteSorry about Amy's ears--but more sorry you guys have to put up with her tossing it. I don't have any ideas as to getting her to take it either. Hope you have some luck getting it into her. I can't remember having any problems with all my darlings but must have had some along the way. Was she swimming--could that be how she got such bad infection in her ears? I hope she doesn't have the problem you did with your ears. That was awful!! Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteLove to you all, Gram
